Biography Kurita, Yû (1896 - 1961)

Yû Kurita was born in Shizuoka prefecture. After having studied western-style painting he exhibited with the Nihon Sôsaku-Hanga Kyôkai from 1920. He was a founding member of the Nihon Hanga Kyôkai. He contributed both to Han geijutsu and to HANGA.
In 1930 and 1931 he was in Europe. On his return he concentrated on painting, exhibiting with the Inten and Teiten (a.o.).
His woodblock prints are highly textured: his repeated use af a fine gouge is evocative of an impressionist's brush.
