Biography Yoshida, Yoshihiko (1912 - 2001)

Born in Tokyo, Yoshida Yoshihiko (吉田 善彦) won the first prize (for painting) in the 24th Academy Exhibition in 1937. In 1940 he became assistent in the Meiji Hashimoto Horyuji mural painting project. Also after the war he was mainly (and widely) known as a painter. He became a professor at the Tokyo Arts University, and in 1982 he won both the Mainichi Art Prize and the Imperial Japan Art Academy Award.
He has made a limited number of woodblock prints, done in soft, subtle colours and colour gradations. They are extremely well-printed and are instantly recognizable.
