Biography Mabuchi, Tôru (1920 - 1984)

Tôru Mabuchi was born in Tokyo, the son of Rokutarô Mabuchi, who was a wood-engraver and pioneer in the airbrush technique. Unusually for those days the father encouraged his son to become an artist. He graduated at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1941, having attended Hiratsuka's woodblock printing course there, like so many other artists in that period. He was a member of various Hanga groups after the war. In 1962 he was represented at the Tokyo International Print Biennale. He was also a teacher at Hiroshima University.
His plates are often composed of many small pieces of thin wood adhered like mosaics. His favourite subjects are landscapes, still-lifes and pottery.
