Biography Nakagawa, Mokurei (1919 - 1979)

Nakagawa Mokurei was born in Murogawa city in Yamagata prefecture in 1919. Following the advice of Kataoka Mito, a sculptor, he went to study woodblock printing in Tokyo in the 30s. Next to carving his own designs he excelled in making reprints of traditional woodblock prints after WWII. Tokyo City Council designated him as Living National Treasure in 1955.
