Biography Kosugi, Misei (1881 - 1964)

Kosugi Misei was originally trained as a painter. He went to Tokyo in 1898, and in 1902 he was one of the founders of the Taiheiyôgakai (Pacific Western-style Painting Society), which rivalled the Hakubakai (White Horse Society), whose exponent was Seiki Kuroda, and which was founded in 1893. He was one of the artists who made newspaper illustrations of the Russo-Japanese war (1904). He also contributed lithographs, etchings and woodblock prints to Heitan and Hôsun. In 1913 he was in France with his close friend Yamamoto Kanae. He contributed "delicate, whimsical scenes" (HM) to Japanese Scenery Prints - Nihon Fûkei Hanga in 1918. Later in his life he changed to Japanese-style painting.
