Biography Yoshida, Masaji (1917 - 1971)

Yoshida Masaji was born in Wakayama City in 1917. Before WWII he was trained as an artist at the Kawabata Art School, and during his training he was a member of the moku-hanga class taught by Hiratsuka. In 1942 he was enlisted, wounded in action, hospitalized and a POW until returning to Japan in 1946. After a graduate course at The Tokyo School of Fine Arts he became a high-school arts and crafts teacher. He was inspired by the abstract prints of Kōshirō Onchi and Fumio Kitaoka. His work was exhibited at many international exhibitions. He also made stencil prints and etchings. He died in 1971 at age 54. The Wakayama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art has a collection of his work.
