Biography Gempô, Sôhan (1848 - 1922)
Better known as Shôun, Gempô Sôhan had a very distinguished career. In his book The Art of Twentieth-century Zen Stephen Addiss devotes half a chapter to him (pp. 84-93). He trained under Nantembô, from whom he received his inka. In 1908 he became abbott of Daitoku-ji, perhaps the most important Zen temple in Kyoto. He was one of the most prolific and important of Meiji Zen artists.
