Biography Kôseki, Nakanishi 耕石 中西 (1807 - 1884)
Nakanishi Kôseki was born in Osaka in 1807. He studied first in Osaka, then went to Kyoto to work and study in the studio of Oda Kaisen (1785-1862), who was a nanga painter. He also studied the Southern Chinese style. This resulted in a style which is typical for the Meiji nanga style. He moved back to Osaka when he was 26, and lived there for the rest of his life. He was very popular in the Kansai area. He is known best for his landscapes.
