Biography Chinnen Onishi 椿年 大西 (1792 - 1851)

Onishi Chinnen was a Shijō painter who lived in Edō. He was born in a samurai family in 1792 and was attached to the Tokugawa government.
He studied Maruyama style painting under Watanabe Nangaku, when this artist came to the capital. He also studied under Tani Bunchō. Recurring themes are landscapes and kacho-e in the typical Shijō style. He was very talented and successful in conveying the essence of a form with a minimum of brushwork. He was best-known for his creative compositions in his illustrated books. The best was Sonan Gafu of 1834. He died in 1851.
