Biography Odake, Chikuha 尾竹 竹坡 (1878 - 1938)

Odake Chikuha (older brother of Odake Kokkan) first studied nanga painting. He later went to Tokyo and studied Maruyama-Shijô painting with Kawabata Gyokushô (1842-1913) and Yamato-e with Kobori Tomone (1864-1931) and Kajita Hanko (1970-1917). He and his younger brother Kokkan were popular artists at the end of the Meiji and into the early Taisho years. He was briefly a member of the Society for Refinement of National Painting but withdrew from this group. He was a frequent exhibitor and prize winner at the Bunten, and later became active at the Teiten.
