The calligraphy is by Takeda Mokurai (1854-1930). Mokurai, which literally translates to 'silent thunder', was a highly influential zen priest of his time and at the age of 39 became the abbot of one of the oldest Zen temples in Kyoto, Kennin-ji. He became a monk at the age of ten, receiving his official enlightenment from the Priest Yuzen (1842-1918). He was actively involved with artists of the day, including Tsuji Kakô.
