Nichiren Shōnin - Saint Nichiren Paper size: 56.7 x 70 cm In the bottom margin, in pencil: "Unchiren Shōnin" (an interesting mis-spelling!), Un-ichi Hiratsuka and 1.003/10.000. Dated 1937 ("Finished carving on 2 May 1937"), red square seal reading "Hiratsuka Un-ichi".

Fine impression, good condition: the paper is not of the quality normally used by Hiratsuka, probably due to war shortages. Also the size of the paper is different from the size given in the Prints Catalogue of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo: 56.7 x 70 cm, instead of 50 x 79.2 cm., perhaps for the same reason. To quote Hiratsuka: "For a long time I wished to make a print of Nichiren, and I finally made this in 1937. I intend to make 10.000 ipmpressions of it, and if I cannot finish while I am alive, I will finish in heaven." (source: Hiratsuka, Modern Master)
