Hotaru (螢) Fireflies, from the series Maiko junikagetsu - Twelve months of Maiko

Paper size: 22.8 x 63.5 cm.
Number 170 from an edition of 175, self-printed ca. 1975. Print details in pencil in the bottom margin.
Fireflies refer to chapter 25 of Genji Monogatari: Tamazakura, foster child of Prince Genji does not want to see or be seen by any of her suitors. Prince Hotaru, younger brother of Genji presents himself and Genji releases fireflies (hotaru), so that the prince can have a glimpse of Tamazakura. It works and Prince Hotaru is quite taken to her......
