Furusawa, Iwami (1902 - 2000)
Shuragaki (修羅餓鬼) - Hungry demon Paper size of the individual 30 etchings: 28.5 x 37.8 cm. Each numbered 4/50. Published in 1993 in a very limited edition of 50. The creation of this set took 30 years. At the time of publication this boxed set cost ¥1,200,000, around USD 7000. It is reminiscent of Francisco Goya’s series “Disasters of war”, created between 1810-20, and of the work of another Japanese artist, Hamada Chimei (1917-2018). Most of the 30 etchings are difficult to look at. Still, this is a very important series, very rarely found complete. I am showing two etchings and a survey of the complete set (Detail 2). Large pictures of all 30 etchings are available.
