Kawakami, Sumio (1895 - 1972)

Nanbanburri - Nanbanesque Behaviour
Paper size: 64.2 x 47 cm. Printed on mustard-coloured paper in 1955. Most of the colours are hand-applied, therefore no two prints of this design are identical. One of the best-known post WWII sōsaku hanga prints. This image was used by Helen Merritt for the dust-jacket of her book Modern Japanese woodblock prints. This print exists in various editions. The one shown here is not the first but comes closest to the one shown in Kawakami Sumio, Shi to e no sekai - Kawakami Sumio, World of poetry and prints, Kanuma Municipal Art Museum of Kawakami Sumio, 1995, page 57.
