Drawings by Harris, Frederick

Frederick Harris was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1932. In the Korean war he came to Japan, stayed on and eventually founded The Design Studio, a prominent architectural firm, in Tokyo. He was very active in Tokyo: he served as president of the Tokyo American Club, the Navy League and the Jewish Community Center, and he was involved in numerous other organizations. For his contributions to US-Japan relations he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette by the Emperor.
He established his name as an artist in the course of his stay in Japan. One of his paintings is on permanent display at the US Embassy in Tokyo. In 2004 he was asked by to design a postage stamp to commemorate 150 years of Japan-US relations - the first living artist to be so recognized. He died in Tokyo in November 2010.
