Drawings by Zeshin, Shibata 是真 紫田 Shibata Zeshin was an incredibly prolific artist, who excelled in two fields: he was without any doubt the best lacquerer of the 19th century, and he was an extremely skilful painter as well. As a young man he had studied painting with two Shijo artists, Suzuki Nanrei and Okamoto Toyohiko, and later in his life these two skills overlapped, when he painted numerous lacquer paintings (so using lacquer as paint).
