Biography Hôitsu, Sakai (1761 - 1828)
Of aristocratic descent, Hôitsu received an eclectic painting education. He studied under Kano school teachers, but also studied Ukiyo-e, Maruyama and Nanga school painting, before taking to the Rimpa school, on the advice of Tani Bunchô. In 1797 he became a Buddhist priest and then spent the last 21 years of his life in seclusion, studying the life and works of Kôrin.
