Biography Makino, Munenori (1940 - )

Born in Shizuoka prefecture, Makino Munenori developed a taste for traditional woodblock prints as early as 1955, visiting woodblock craftsmen in both Tokyo and Kyoto. In 1958 he started learning the technique of woodblock carving and printing, and from 1977 he started having smaller solo exhibitions all over Japan. In 1989 he won his first major prize (the Kawamura Foundation for Cultural Promotion prize), and since then his career has been booming, with many prizes and major solo exhibitions: in 2003, he received the Chief Secretary's Prize from the Agency of Cultural Affairs in Japan. He also created huge-scale ceramic wall prints hanging in the Shizuoka Airport Terminal and in March 2010 he had a solo exhibition at the Nippon club in New York: "Beyond Hokusai and Hiroshige, Makino Munenori Complete Woodblock Priints".
