Biography Hirai, Baisen (1889 - 1969)

Born in Kyoto in 1889, Baisen Hirai graduated at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts in 1906.
Hirai chose an independent career and was not trained at a studio. He is mainly known as a painter, and not as a woodblock print artist. From 1907-1931 his works were exhibited at the Bunten.
His early work shows great vivacity and inventiveness, which declined in his later years.
His style is often associated with that of Maeda Seison (1885-1977), because of its bird’s eye view and its very wet brushwork.
