Biography Iwaya, Sazanami (1869 - 1933)

Sazanami Iwaya was a man of many parts, who grew up in an artistic family. Apart from being a politician and a senator in the House of Lords, his father, Ichiroku Iwaya (1834-1905), was a well-known and respected calligrapher in the Meiji Era.
Sazanami Iwaya was destined to become a doctor, but against his father's wishes he studied literature; nowadays he is considered the founder of modern Japanese children's literature.

Courtesy of Jon de Jong, who pointed out another painting of his hand (#74) in his wonderful book Haiku & Haiga.
