Biography Oda, Kyôsai 織田 杏齋 (1845 - 1912)
Oda Kyôsai was born in November 1845. He was taught by his father; as usual he learned by copying the great masters. He visited many heritage places, absorbing what he found there. Later he became even more eclectic in his preferences, which ranged from Nanga to Western-style painting. He was particularly fond of bird-and-flower painting, which he considered the basis of all painting skills. Interestingly enough he was also interested in photography at an early age, and in 1871 he opened a photography studio. He is known for a series of photographs of the Tokaido. He was fond of Hokusai's work and he actively collected his sumi-e drawings. He also made designs for Shippo-yaki pottery. In November 1912 he passed away in Nagoya.
