Biography Shûsô, Katô 秋莊 加籐 (1912 - )

Katô Shûsô was born in Toyama Prefecture in 1912. He was a graduate of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, and he exhibited with both the Nitten and Inten on a number of occasions. Twelve times he exhibited with the Nihon-ga-in, receiving awards on five occasions.
Though utilizing Western techniques in his work, his use of Japanese pigments as opposed to oil paint places his work firmly in the category of Nihonga (Japanese painting) as opposed to Yôga (Western-style painting).
