Kunichika, Toyohara (1835 - 1900)

Shipwreck
Ichikawa Danjuro IX (above) in the role of Kondo Tatsuo, and Ichikawa Sadanji I (below) in the role of Mikura Tomizo, both clinging onto the mast of a ship. This is the scene called Sinking Steam Ship in Kishu Bay - Kishu no oki kisen chinbotsu from the play Sanpu goko utsusu gento performed at the Shintomi-za theatre in October 1887.

Fine impression and colours (extensive use of mica on the waves and diagonal swathes of transparent gofun), good condition: some trimming (top sheet: 23.2 x 35 cm, bottom sheet: 23.6 x 35.6 cm), and a few very minor condition issues - unbacked.
